Children’s day
Children’s day in Thailand is celebrated on the second Saturday in January. This year, it is on Saturday 14 January.
Thai people know as or call as“Wan Dek”. Children’s Day is celebrated to give children the opportunity to have fun. Many places have activities for children to enjoy in games or competitions. Children should have fun and enjoy their life on this day but there was a tragedy occurred at Chiang Mai International Airport.
A soldier was killed when his parachute failed to open during a skydiving demonstration. The accident happened in front of parents and children who had come to see the show. The soldier jump from a helicopter and his parachute failed to open. He died when his body hit the ground.
I heard this news and felt tragedy. I believe many eyes who watched the show would have never forgotten the picture when the man fell to the ground. How about children? I think they do not want to be aviator anymore. To me, shows on Children’s day should not be risky, dangerous or unsafe. What do you think?
That is very terrible! I don’t like the idea of showing that kind of show on Children’s day especially all the military equipments such as tanks, guns, and cannons. I understand that the government and the Military want to instill children to love the country by presenting that being soldiers is the way to show their loves and protect people and the country. So, they show all kinds of military equipments on Children’s day which they hope that these things will help encourage children to be soldiers. On the other hand, the governments don’t realize that they are giving the two –edged sword which one side could hurt children. The military show crates violence in children; it encourages children to use guns in their real life, it instills children that only weapons and violence can protect them, and children will absorb that using weapons is acceptable in the society and it’s not dangerous. Since children are on the age that can easily absorb and learn things, they might easily absorb all these negative ideas. Moreover, since the military equipments represent the war, it is the implication to children that there must be wars so that the country will still be existed. Unfortunately, many children will grow up to be the victims of this violence.

I agree with Jenjira that the thrilling shows on Children's Day are not appropriate. Children are childrean. They do not realize what is good or what is bad. They might absorb the violence from the military's shows and equipments such as the tank show and the guns show. Moreover, what children will feel when they see such a tragedy right before their eyes. It might be the way to instill the patriotism to children, but I think it does not work. Because many Thai men tend to desert when grow up. Therefore, the organizations should provide more activities for children to show their talent instead.
ReplyDeleteI heard about an accident during military demonstration every year. I agree with all of you that military show on children day is not appropriate for children because it can cause accidents. However, it’s very rare for us to see real military hardware in our daily life, except on Children day. I think it would be great if they would cut off all military demonstrations for avoiding unpredictable accidents, but still remain military hardware exhibition for an education. Actually, there are many places for children to enjoy on that day such as department stores, theme parks, and zoos. The decision about where to take children to is depending on their parents. The military don’t force them to come anyway. If they don’t want their children to get involved with military things, they can just bring their children to other places.
